Activity
Blast Off to Learn New Words
Activity Description
This virtual trip to the moon uses several methods to help children learn new words in a fun and exciting way. Children make word lists and then use the words in discussions, spot them in a story that's read aloud, and define them in a moon dictionary. These activities help children develop their vocabulary skills while also showing off what they know.
Why This Is Helpful
A virtual journey to the moon immerses children in an adventure: What will they need to pack? How will they get there? What will they see once they arrive? When all those sparks are flying, children are likely to learn more and remember more. This activity uses proven methods in teaching vocabulary, such as letting children listen for moon-related words in a story. Children also will create their own alphabet dictionary with a moon theme. If you’re taking a group of children on this imaginary field trip, discussion time will give them a chance to collaborate with their fellow space travelers.
