Helpful Information About Geometric Shapes and Solids

Looking for a little help? The pictures and links below should help you finish
the puzzle. Before you know it, you'll finish the puzzle—and be a geometry genius.

Super Shapes
There are lots of different shapes in geometry. The shapes below are all polygons:

square pentagon
triangle rectangle

Terrific Triangles
Three-sided polygons are called triangles. Triangles always have three sides, but the sides are not always the same length. Here are some different kinds of triangles:

scalene triangle equilateral triangle isosceles

Awesome Angles
Every polygon has angles. An angle is the place where two lines meet or intersect. Different kinds of angles include

obtuse angle right angle acute angle

Perfect Polyhedrons
What do you get when you connect a bunch of polygons? A polyhedron! This is a geometric solid (or three-dimensional figure) whose sides or faces are polygons. The faces are connected by edges. The following shapes are all polyhedra (that's the word for more than one polyhedron):

cube tetrahedron octahedron
dodecahedron icosahedron

Because polyhedrons have sides that are polygons, you can make a flat drawing of the polygons that will turn into a solid when you fold it. This is called a net or "shape jacket." A net for a tetrahedron looks like this:

tetrahedron shape jacket

To see how this net folds up, visit Interactives: Geometry 3D Shapes and check out the tool at the bottom of the page.
